Hey everyone!  It’s four whole days before Christmas (and my Birthday!) and we’ve already been visited by DWD in a Santa hat.  I’ve been brewing my little heart out and today I wanted to bring you my take on Rakano Gunslingers.  The deck is a blast to play and fills the double-barrel shaped hole in my meta-game-heart.

The deck kind of builds itself, as tribal decks are wont to do.  This build has a very limited removal suite.  Tribal decks want to capitalize on their synergies and to do that we eschew most of the removal and just jam all the good gunslingers and weapons that we can into the deck.  That being said 2 Torch is probably not enough (although I’ve been winning quite a bit with just 2) and I expect to broaden the removal suite a bit once the meta has settled.  Let’s go over some choices.

There isn’t much to say about Oni Ronin that hasn’t already been said, except that I wish it was a gunslinger!

Champion of Glory was too often a 3/1 that got killed by Vara’s Favor, but now that gunslinger type-line justifies that weakness.

Rakano Outlaw was probably already the best fire two-drop and now her type-line is extremely relevant.

Milos, my man!  Have you lost some weight?  Say maybe 3 power?  Milos is effectively a 4/3 for 3 in this deck which is a good rate.  However, the double damage is insane with weapons (especially Deepforged Plate) and his +2 power has been surprisingly relevant.  Many times you’ll be able to play a weapon on turn 4, swing with Milos, and then be able to play a 2 drop post-combat.  When Milos was first spoiled I figured the extra power was for ramping, but its a surprisingly aggressive ability.

Stella, Stella, Stella.  I’m not sure what to think of you yet, but I think you’ve earned your spot.  Once she is wearing and equipment she is essentially warcrying your whole deck.  She makes all of your topdecks better but you do need to draw them.  I can see cutting her down to 3 moving forward.

Whirling Duo has really swept me off my feet.  I love this card and it’s exactly what the Dr. ordered when you are facing off against relic weapons.  The card makes racing next to impossible and gives an early hasty threat to prevent Auric Runhammer from 2-for-1ing you.

Jekk is amazing.  Not playing Soulfire Drake in this slot is painful, but so far I’ve been really happy with Jekk.  First of all, he is HUGE.  7/5 quickdraw is impossible to block and even if he gets silenced he is still a threat.   Once you throw Quartermaster into the ring though things get really crazy.  I had to discard cards to handsize on several occasions after that combo gets going, but your opponent is likely dead if Jekk’s swings more than once.

Quartermaster gives the deck some much needed gas.  Often a single wipe was enough to shut down rakano, but not anymore!

Granite waystone solves a problem that many weapon based decks can run into and that is running out of bodies to put guns on.  I’ve been so impressed with this I plan on removing the Emerald Waystones and playing all 4 of these.

The most important thing to talk about here is why Rakano didn’t get any decent Guns to go with its Gunslingers.  Complete flavor fail here and Direwolf should be ashamed!  We need a playable Gun in the next Campaign or we riot!

All of the weapons here synergize with the rest of the deck and are pretty standard for Rakano decks.  Katana is an addition after several games where I just needed more gas early and couldn’t find it.  It also replaces its self with a card AND now with its cost if you play it on Milos.

Hammer and Plate have and will continue to be amazing.  I’m happy with the 3-3 split.

That’s it for Rakano Hammerslingers today!  If you’ve been missing throwing Plate onto a unit and smashing face then this is definitely the deck for you.

It’s hard to see behind that deep forged plate, but this is a mulligan.  We would prefer our curve to start at 1 or 2.

This is another tempting hand given the synergy between Oni Quartermaster and Jekk, but this hand should 100% be redrawn.

Hurray for our first keepable hand!  Rakano Outlaw into Milos is exactly what we want to be doing and we can even follow it up with a Whirling Duo.

The power is a bit sketchy here, but we keep this because Turn 1 oni ronin.  Also Stella + Plate is pretty amazing.

  1. I feel like this specific tribal colour combo is better off committing more to being mid-range. As good as a lot of the new cards are, they’re a bit pricier than the usual rakano fare, and a bit slower, but can put out some absurd value. Obviously this deck is going to work well enough because it’s basically plate, but there’s potential, and maybe even some room to go 3 faction with the shadow stuff.

  2. I like those “Keep or Mull” activities at the end. Being an average Eternal player, it makes me feel good when I get the answers right!
