Hey everyone!  Today we have our first installment of Gauntlet Grinder here at JankJunction!  This series will be focused on decks that can efficiently earn gold by beating up on the Gauntlet AI.  A secondary focus will be on extremely budget new player friendly decks.  And today we have a very cheap deck!  Bond Sentinels.

If you aren’t a fan of words you can skip to the Videos at the bottom of the article.

This deck started out as a thought experiment revolving around the upcoming event.  In the event, you start the game with +2 power and I was wondering to myself what the most busted 3 drop in the game was.  After a few minutes perusing the card library, I came across one of my first Eternal loves, Ageless Mentor.  If you play Ageless Mentor on turn 1 and Sandstorm Titan on turn 2 you could theoretically bond out most of your hand by turn 3.  If you managed to play a Gear Master in there then it would be really hard to lose the game because that is an insane value engine.  So I quickly threw together a Ranked version of the list running some power accelorators since the event wasn’t live and the deck performed pretty well.  Sadly the current ranked Meta is filled with decks running Harsh Rule, which means this sweet deck needed a new home.

Gear_Master
Insistent_Automaton

Ageless Mentor makes most of our units larger, but more importantly, accelerates our bond units.  The additional power she grants allows for extremely explosive turns where we flood the board with huge sentinels.

When Gear Master was first spoiled I thought it was kind of awful.  But that is because I was imagining her in decks full of non-bond sentinels.  Once your sentinels become almost free-to-play, turning them into cantrips (cards that draw another card when played) is extremely powerful; bordering on broken.

Insistent Automaton seems to have a drawback, but in this deck its all upside.  It allows us to retrigger our Mentors plus many other tricks that you can see in the gameplay videos.  This is a centerpiece of the deck.  Fun note:  If you can make two of these free, you can draw your entire deck with a Gear Master in play.

Tempered_Sentinel
Intriguing_Ancient
Scourstone_Sentinel

Tempered Sentinel is the cheapest Bond unit in the deck and it also has charge! This is often an Insistent Automaton target because you can often replay it for free to draw cards with Gear Master.

Intriguing Ancient is here because it has Bond.  A 4/5 for 8 is not great, but its fine from 0-4.  This also gives some insurance against board wipes.

Scourstone Sentinel is the largest payoff we have for bond.  Once this comes down most of our other bond units become free.

Upgrade Path

For those looking to upgrade the deck or simply aren’t on a budget this is what the list would look like.  Obvious inclusions are Crests and Sandstorm Titans.  If you are on a budget craft the Crests first and then start working toward the Titans.

Keep Or Mull

BSHand1

Check your answer!

This hand is 100% going to be redrawn.  We have no way to accelerate into these threats.

BSHand2

Check your answer!

This is a pretty speculative keep.  We can play a sentinel on t3, which means we could start bonding on t4.  This is a keep on the draw and a redraw if you are on the play.

BSHand3

Check your answer!

This hand has everything we need except for sentinels!  I think this is a keep.  The 4/4 Gearmasters will stall long enough to draw a sentinel and then its off to the races.

BSHand4

Check your answer!

This is an ideal hand.

Turn 1 Initiate.
Turn 2 Mentor.
Turn 3 Gearmaster
Turn 4 Wandering + draw and play a Tempered Sentinel if you draw it.

  1. I love this deck. Finally got me winning Gauntlets. Initially all I added was a couple of crests and Diogo (oh my god he’s stupid in this), because I had them. I’ve got the obelisks, but Ancient Defenses is great in here. It’s like four more Torches PLUS the buff. And, Obelisks just feels like adding insult to injury when I’m bonding in 7, 8, 9, plus power sentinels.

What I don’t understand is why I can’t get anyone else to go along with me on this. After I tried Diogo I crafted a single Novequake and walked leisurely to Gauntlet masters. Easily my happiest craft.

Oh, and Trail Maker instead of Initiate. I wasn’t doing anything on turn one anyway, so I swapped them, and any mana fixing issues just evaporated.
